Great news folks! Google is adding new features in its current free email service Google Mail a.k.a. Gmail. Gmail is already popular with its current features such like Storage, Spam filter, Gmail lab, Gmail Mobile, etc and we hope after addition of new features will add icing on the cake.
Gmail was launched on February 7, 2007 for general public. Before that Gmail was available in beta version for invitation only on April 1, 2004. Gmail had initially provided 1GB storage space for each user to bit the competitors who were providing 2-4 MB storage at that time also to have Gmail account only been available to whom who got invitation as they haven’t provided new account signup facility in their homepage. It was only created after invitation and each user have been restricted with only 50 invitations. With in short period of time Gmail became one of the top email client used by users all over the world. Gmail consistently provided better services with adding facilities in current features such as increase the storage space also provided with growing popularity as users like the features and number increased they have lifted this restriction. Nowadays, it is easy to make email account with Gmail as they have provided signup facility on the Gmail homepage. Gmail has more than 145+ millions users each month as of July, 2009. Gmail as well faced some criticism and technical problems in the past.
Gmail is looking to add 10 new features with commitment to provide better security, large storage space and simplicity in usability. Currently, Gmail is facing hard competition and to keep itself on top webmail service provider, adding new features is the only and best way.
- Secure Encryption: Gmail is now providing mandatory secure encryption for users which provide additional security to users. Google wanted to provide secure environment to users of its email service which have to be tough to hack. With most of users now saving their private information in their emails such as bank and credit card statements. Because of the connection is getting routed and getting encrypted if user is facing difficulty with slower speed, user can able to turn off secure encryption feature. Now onwards Gmail account hacking and decoding it will be very tough for hackers which put smiles on the face of Gmail users.
- Increased Storage Space: Users can now able to increase their storage space to 20GB with spending minimal amount US$5 a year. Gmail and Picasa web albums is sharing extra storage and works as overflow if a user used available free storage.
- Free SMS: Cheers! Now Gmail users are able send SMS from Gmail. Google lab developed SMS facility for users to send SMS using Gmail. This feature currently available only to USA, but we are hopeful for Google to make this feature available globally.
- Embarrassment-avoidance Tool: This new feature from Google lab helps users from sending emails to unidentified recipient. Gmail will identify the group of the people to whom user sends emails more often and also alerts user when they change this pattern. Gmail users get warning message when they are about to send email to undesired recipient, this is called “Got the wrong Bob”.
Users can enable this new feature by making changes in Gmail settings. Sometimes users forget who they have added in their long contact list and even not sent mail from long time. The new feature called “Don’t forgot Bob” made to help users to get list of recipient whom they haven’t sent mail from long time but they are in their contact list.
- More themes: Gmail is providing 4 latest themes. Users can select any one of them or select “Random” option which will change theme every day. Users can check out available themes under themes tab in settings.
- Message Translation: Just turning on the “Message Translation” from Labs tab in the Settings will help you in translation of any message which is other than own language. Just clicking on one button Gmail will automatically translate the message language into a language user understands.
- To-do List: It is useful feature help you to keep track of daily tasks and important tasks. Users don’t have to keep notebook or pen and keep their mind reminding tasks, just add the tasks and wherever you go you access the tasks to be finished like meeting or birthdays of your important ones.
- Drag and Drop labels: This feature allow users to messages to labels and vice-versa like folders. The labels users commonly uses are easily accessible and available above the chat list, others stay hidden though users can access that by clicking on “More”. Users are able to customize the labels which they want to see by doing change under Labels tab in settings.
- YouTube, Flickr, Picasa and Yelp previews: By turning on this feature user get previews of photos, videos and reviews in the emails instead clicking on the links. Just turn on this feature to experience it by turning on this from settings.
- Access Tasks on mobile: Today mobile is more than just communication device. Mobile market is growing and providing special features to its users. Internet now available in most of the devices. Users with internet accessible mobile can access to do list everywhere they go by clicking on mail.google.com/tasks from your mobile browser which helps not to carry laptop or notebook everywhere you go.
